June Quilt Block Mania: Riding the Waves

Welcome back to another month of Quilt Block Mania! As the weather warms up here in Winnemucca, there is no better theme for June than Water. Whether it’s a calm lake, a rushing river, or the vast sea, water has a way of inspiring movement and tranquility in our quilting designs.

For this month’s challenge, I am thrilled to introduce my latest block: Waves.

Capturing the Ocean in Fabric

When I thought about the water theme, I kept coming back to the rhythmic motion of ocean waves. To capture that swirling, continuous energy, I designed a variation of the classic Snail's Trail block. By shifting the traditional color placement and focusing on three distinct shades of blue—Light, Medium, and Dark—the block transforms into a crashing wave that looks far more intricate than it actually is to piece.

Tips for Success

This block relies on careful color placement to create the "wave" effect. I highly recommend pressing all three fabrics and stacking them to cut together, as many of the cuts are duplicated for each color.

A few more tips as you dive in:

• Label Your Pieces: As you cut your triangles (A through F), label them immediately. This will save you time and potential seam-ripping later.

• Master the Center: The heart of the block is Unit C, which combines a unique four-patch strategy with a rectangle to create a 3 ½ inch square base.

• Consistent Seams: Use a scant ¼" seam allowance throughout to ensure your block trims perfectly to 12 ½".
